Hair inspiration

So a rope braid, wrapped up going around itself (I think? It's not too easy to see from the second last picture) and secured somehow.

I can't do rope braids.
But I can do Dutch braids. I usually wrap them down around the neck before going up again through.
It's worth a try to see if it looks better or different from going up first and wrapping them around themselves.

Unimpressed Igor is unimpressed.

This was really not cute at all.

I think this would be a super cute style if your hair was just long enough, that the braids can "reach" each other and do the little twist on top before tucking them under themselves.
A lot of length is definitely not good for this one. I had to wrap them around the "base" of the braids before wrapping up again.

Or maybe if you have less volume?  It did get very bulky.

Oh well. Was worth a try.

  1. Well I give you high marks for trying...but as you say not all styles are compatible with mega length and thickness. I must say the color looks so wonderful in these pics.

    1. Well, I never wanted my blog to be a polished, picture-perfect pinterest-kind of thing... Fails can be as interesting as successes ;) And thank you!

  2. I often try some cute-looking styles and in about 95% I come to the conclusion that my hair is too thick to look cute. My crown area has a "normal" amount of hair, but at the back and nape I just have so much hair. And thick hair, too. It makes styles look bulky, uneven, not nice and pretty at all. I guess we just need to accept that most hairstyles are more geared towards less thickness and length.
I still do dream of a messy bun with just an elastic that doesn't look like an accident that's trying to bite off my head, though....

    1. Seriously! XD You just cannot get the "cute" in any style. You just can't do messy-cute, you end up with "Dude, don't you own a mirror?". Do you also find that the sheer amount of hair "eats up" the details of your 'dos? Like, I stopped doing Celtic knots (which is such a cute and cool style!) because it just ends up as a slightly asymmetrical lump on me and you could barely tell it apart from any other random bun.

    2. Yeah, I've often thought that the mass of hair just seems to swallow any detail! And many updos that look nice when smaller and more delicate look absolutely ridiculous with my hair, and it's much shorter than yours. Currently I'm really struggling with myself there: I need to wash daily and thick hip length hair takes ages to dry in the mornings, so I blow-dry partially and put it up. The moisture makes it even less nice, because it bulks up even more. I'm thinking about shorter and maybe layered hair to thin it out a little, but then I might not like it... okay, it'll grow back, but the way it's now I can put it up blindfolded and it'll look good. Might not be like that with a layered cut.

  3. I have tried this style time and time again, and for my age, no matter when I tried it, it never looked right. I think it is best suited for hair that meets at the top--and, notice they never show a face shot of the girl afterwards, just a back shot.....

    1. Good point! I've never noticed that before, but you are so right about that :O

  4. I always thought that style you were trying was for girls whose hair is to short to cross it around the neck and do a decent tiara braid. I'm not surprised it doesn't look "right" on you. I don't think I have ever seen a girl wearing the style shown IRL who it does look right on.
